Here’s The Answer…
“Can you lose weight doing yoga?”
As someone who practiced yoga for a quite long time, I’ve got asked this same question a lot of times.
So on this post, I’m going to share with you the answer to that question.
If you’re interested in doing yoga with the intention of losing weight, then please spend 5 minutes to read this post. It’d really help you get a better understanding of this subject, PLUS… I’ll also share some really great information you’ll love at the end of this post.
Without further ado, let’s jump into it!
Why People Are Doing Yoga For Losing Weight?
Before we go right into the answer whether yoga works for losing weight, let’s talk about why people – including celebrities like Madonna, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Aniston – are doing yoga for losing weight.
The answer is simple… It doesn’t make you stressful.
Yes. Not because it’s working better than the traditional way of losing weight like cardio, but instead, it’s because Yoga doesn’t make you stressful.
If you’re trying to lose weight with cardio, you tend to feel tired and stressful because you have to work hard to hit your fitness goal. But with Yoga, you’ll truly enjoy your weight-loss journey.
Now, here’s what’s really interesting…
When you’re feeling less stressful, it actually makes it easier for you to lose weight.
That’s because you can maintain your cortisol level.
In case you didn’t know, the cortisol level is a hormone that directly affects your weight.
Remember when you’re feeling stressed, you crave for sweet, high-fat, and salty foods? Yes, that’s what happens when your cortisol level increased.
Ironically, this usually happened to people who’re losing weight with cardio and other common weight loss methods.
Unlike yoga, these methods make you feel stressful, which is why it’s hard for you to hit your weight loss goals.
On the other hand, if you’re losing weight with yoga, this won’t happen to you.
So not only it allows you to truly enjoy your weight-loss journey, but it’ll also make it easier for you to lose weight. Sounds interesting, right?
Yoga Also Helps You Follow Your Diet Plan With Ease
How many times did you give up following your diet plan because you can’t resist eating your favorite food?
If you’re like many people, it happened a lot of times.
But don’t worry… If you’re losing weight doing Yoga, I guarantee you’ll never fail to follow your diet plan again.
Why? Here’s why…
For people who’re practicing yoga, their mind has a better level of awareness.
So it’ll make you more conscious of what food you eat and how it affects your body.
In other words, it allows you to take control of your mind on choosing the food you’re going to eat.
This has been proved by a 2016 study that suggested people who develop mindfulness through yoga practice can resist unhealthy foods and comfort eating.
While sure, it doesn’t directly affect your weight, but this should be a great benefit for people who’ve always failed in following their diet plans. And if you’re one of these people, you have another reason to start doing yoga right now.
Yoga Helps You Burn Calories With A Better Sleep Quality
This is probably something you’ve never thought about.
Did you know that having a better quality of sleep can also help you lose weight?
Yes, according to a 2018 study, people who restricted sleep five times per week lose less fat than those who were having their normal sleep patterns.
And no, this is not because we tend to snack at night.
It’s simply because your quality of sleep directly affects your body’s ability to burn body fat.
As soon as you start doing yoga, you’ll start to notice you can fall asleep easily at night, and sleep more deeply than before. Thus, will not only make you live healthier but also help you lose your weight faster than ever before.

Can Yoga Help Burn Body Fat?
Now, this is probably the answer you’ve been waiting for.
The answer is yes and no.
Yeah, right. It actually depends on what kind of yoga you choose.
Not all types of yoga can help you lose weight.
Some types of Yoga that can help you lose weight are Ashtanga, vinyasa, and power yoga. These are more physical types of yoga, which usually offered at a hot yoga studio.
They keep you moving constantly, and work really great for burning calories like cardio – but without making you feel tired and stressful.
In case you prefer to choose restorative Yoga, don’t worry… they’re also working really well for losing weight despite it doesn’t work as good as the types of Yoga mentioned above.
There’s one study that found restorative Yoga is also effective for losing weight. But perhaps, you have to be more patient because the result won’t be as fast as doing power yoga.
Now, let’s back to the main question we’re going to answer on this post… “Can you lose weight doing Yoga?”
Yes, you can.
You just have to make a commitment with yourself since losing weight with Yoga won’t provide you with a fast result.
So if Yoga feels more appealing to you than cardio or HIIT, then go ahead… give this unique weight-loss method a try.
And in case you’re wondering about…
“How Often Should I Do Yoga To Lose Weight?”
I recommend practicing for at least three to five times a week, for at least one hour – just like what’s been recommended by the experts.
If this is the first time you start doing Yoga, don’t push yourself too hard. Just start slowly, and continuously improve your practice. This will make sure you can prevent injury, while also helping you build your strength to do more advanced poses.
I also recommend you to do other activities such as cycling and swimming, so you can achieve the desired result faster. PLUS, it’s also good for your cardiovascular benefits.
